The last weekend in August 2021 was a very chilly one throughout South Africa. A cold front worked its way over the country bringing wintery conditions everywhere. Even Table Mountain received a smattering of snow on the highest points and at the Upper Cableway Station!

The Western Cape was turned into a winter wonderland with good snow falls on the mountains near Franschhoek - only 100km from Cape Town. People flocked there to see the sight and enjoy the magical winter landscape. Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve, pictured here, was a popular wintery destination.

It is now the middle of June and the cooler winter days have arrived in Cape Town. Here at Newlands Guest House we will endeavour to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

To start your day, we offer a breakfast of fruits, cereals and cooked options such as bacon, sausages, mushrooms and eggs to order. During these 'çovid' times, we realise that some of our guests would prefer their evening meal at the guest house. We are therefore happy to offer a simple one course supper for less than R100 per person - if you would like to make use of this option, please let us know at breakfast that day.

All our rooms are heated and we always ensure that you have extra blankets should you need them!

LION'S HEAD HIKE

Lions Head forms part of Table Mountain National Park and is a popular hiking trail. It affords the hiker 360 degree view of the city of Cape Town, Camps Bay and the stunning Twelve Apostles coastline. The start point is on the Signal Hill road. The clockwise route initially climbs up the jeep track and winds round the mountain. Higher up there are a series of ladders and staples to assist in scrambling over the rock pitches and a head of heights is needed here. For those who prefer something less demanding, there is the option to continue on the spiral path.

Whichever route you decide upon, the rewards at the top are well worth the effort and the views are spectacular. The hike can get busy, especially over weekends so don't forget your face mask and sanitizer - and you may have to wait your turn to use the ladders! For the more adventurous, sunrise and and full moon hikes are popular. Pack water, snacks, a warm top and charged cellphone with emergency numbers.

The hike will take approx 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on your level of fitness and how long you spend at the top.

UNIVERSITY OF CAPE TOWN

The University of Cape Town is reopening its doors soon. After a difficult 2020, UCT will be reopening on 25 February 2021 for postgraduate students and on 1 March 2021 for new and returning undergraduate students.

Here at Newlands Guest House, we are ideally situated for UCT - we are less than 2km from the main campus and close to many university residences. For parents bringing down their first year students, this can be a stressful time. Why not stay with us for a few days at our tranquil guest house while your youngsters get settled in? For many, summer holidays were very different this year. But … whether you stayed at home or travelled, it is now time to head back to work. Some will continue to work from home, some will return to the office and others will now have to plan their business trips.

Here at Newlands Guest House we aim to make your business trip as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. We offer you the following:

We adhere to Covid protocols - our rooms are sanitised daily using an aerial sanitiser which makes use of a micro-mist diffusion system. We keep our guests socially distanced in our common areas, especially during breakfast time.
We are happy to take bookings for one night only for those quick work trips to Cape Town.
We are only 15mins drive from Cape Town International Airport. Being situated on the Newlands/Rondebosch border we offer easy access to Cape Town CBD and the Southern Suburbs. In addition, we have secure off-street parking for those with a hire car.
Our rooms have desk spaces and there is free fibre Wifi throughout the property. For those wishing to work at the guest house, we offer a quiet and tranquil environment.
At the end of the day order in your evening meal and relax at our pool area or pool lounge.

Cape Town's Blue Flag Beaches

Cape Town boasts some of the most beautiful beaches anywhere in the world offering white sands and crystal clear waters. Ten of these special places have recently been awarded the prestigious international Blue Flag status. These beaches offer visitors so much more than sunbathing and ice creams! They are acknowledged for their safety protocols, amenities, cleanliness, water quality and environmental management.

There are serveral Blue Flag beaches close to Newlands Guest House. Fish Hoek (pictured below) and Muizenberg are on the False Bay coast. Camps Bay, Clifton Fourth Beach and Llandudno are on the Atlantic seaboard. Why not take a drive to include a fish and chips lunch at Kalky's in picturesque Kalk Bay Harbour on the way to Fish Hoek? Thereafter travel over scenic Chapmans Peak Drive to the Atlantic side of the Peninsula. Camps Bay is renowned for its variety of restaurants along 'The Strip' and the sunsets are legendry!

Sanparks Free Entry Week

Sanparks are offering free entry into its National Parks this week.This means that there will be no admission fees at two exciting nearby destinations, namely Cape Point and West Coast National Park (unfortunately, the Boulders Penguin Colony is not included).

The West Coast National Park near Langebaan is one of our favourite destinations. The park is only a 100km drive from Newlands Guest House. Although spring flower season is now finished, there is so much else to see ... a beautiful azure blue lagoon contrasting with crashing waves on the Atlantic seaboard. There is an abundance of African wildlife to be found here such as bontebok, gemsbok, zebra plus a large variety of birds and rare fynbos. For the more active, there are hiking and mountain biking trails. And for those who wish to take things at a more leisurely pace, the Geelbek Restaurant offers a lunch and tea menu.

Numbers to the park may be limited due to Covid restrictions, so it is well worth the effort to get there early and enjoy the day in a wonderful location.

We aim to bring you weekly updates on this page of not only what is happening here at Newlands Guest House but also other interest topics. Think of activities in Newlands, Constantia Winelands, V&A Waterfront and Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Table Mountain hikes and Camps Bay beach walks are all on our doorstep. Over the months ahead we look forward to giving you a small taste of life in our special part of the Western Cape.
